Photo Casebook: 2010 in photos

Here it is: the photo event of the year, literally. The Boston Globe’s Big Picture reviews the past year in 120 breathtaking photographs. Charting natural disasters to human mishaps, moments of triumph to our darkest hours over the last 365 days.

Here’s a few we snatched off the site earlier (link below for full gallery):

A tremendous sinkhole caused by the heavy rains of Tropical Storm Agatha in Guatemala City was estimated to be 30 meters wide and over 60 meters deep. As the sinkhole formed, it swallowed a clothing factory about three miles from the site of a similar sinkhole three years earlier. The clothing factory had closed only an hour before it plunged into the Earth. (REUTERS/Casa Presidencial)

Araya was the sixth from the 33 trapped miners to be lifted from underground. (HUGO INFANTE/AFP/Getty Images)

Residents leave a danger zone as Indonesia's Merapi volcano releases ash clouds above Balerante village, Klaten on November 1, 2010. A series of eruptions and pyroclastic flows wreaked havoc on surrounding villages and farms, killing over 140 people. (ADEK BERRY/AFP/Getty Images)

Photo Casebook: Chris Bretz

Some dope photos from our man Chris Bretz. The subject is up and coming Superstock Motorbike racer Jon Kirkham. Twenty-five-year-old Kirkham has much to be proud of in 2010. Not only did he buy and prepare his own race bikes, but as a privateer rider, he has struggled with funding all season. Despite this, he secured the 2010 Metzeler British Superstock 1000 Championship title with a convincing win at the Croft racing circuit in North Yorkshire on his BMW S 1000 RR.

Check out more work from Chris Bretz here.

Photo Casebook: Students Riot in London

Remember the video about the student protests in the U.K. (see vid here). Well, last Thursday Parliament met and voted to raise university tuition fees significantly to three times the current amount. This seems massively unfair since the people voting were probably all beneficiaries of free higher education in the U.K.

No wonder students got so mad. These pictures show the immediate result of Parliament’s decision.

See more photos from the protest here !

Photo Casebook: Ben Morse

Photo Casebook is a simple game for photography lovers and casual browsers of the art form where we ask snappers to answer a scenario-based question with their own photos…

So, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il has succeeded in taking over the world and is about to impose a worldwide ban on photos. Your camera will be confiscated unless you can justify its use for anything other than taking lovely pictures of the Dear Leader (as above).

Photographer: Ben Morse

This was literally a 'point and click' moment on the coast of Hawaii - photography should be about capturing a moment. That moment is even better if it can be brought to people who won't get the chance to see it themselves. Plus, y'know, it's beautiful and calming and all of that.

Another 'right place, right time' moment, showing the unifying power of music. I don't believe in many things, but music having the power to unite and to uplift is definitely one of them.

This guy is training in Parkour, and had spent the morning unsuccessfully scaling a wall with his bare hands. He'd taped them after they started bleeding, and then kept going. And he honestly didn't care. These guys train armies - I've never met people so committed and passionate about what they do - it was a total pleasure watching them.

You can find Ben Morse at www.benmorse.co.uk, or by searching Facebook for “Ben Morse Photography”.

Calling all photographers, accomplished, unaccomplished, full time cameramen, part time snappers. Participate in Photo Casebook by sending your snaps to photocasebook@love4culture.com (Answer by sending three pictures maximum, with or without explanations, and a link to your site).
