London 1927

Incredible colour footage of 1920s London shot by an early British pioneer of film named Claude Frisse-Greene, who made a series of travelogues using the colour process his father William – a noted cinematographer – was experimenting with. It’s like a beautifully dusty old postcard you’d find in a junk store, but moving.

Great LDN

So how great has London been the last couple of weeks? The Games have gone down without a hitch, we’ve been treated to feats of heroism on a daily basis, sightings of people smiling on the tube have become a regular occurrence and even the sun has been hanging around more often. And although the curtains are about to close on the greatest show on earth we don’t have to stop basking in the glory of our great city. Hence why we’ve knocked up limited edition Great LDN tees for just that purpose, and they’re available only on ASOS Marketplace right now!

While we’re giving ourselves a collective pat on the back lets not forget that there are still people less fortunate than us in this wonderful city for whom the last couple of weeks haven’t changed much. In fact the number of homeless families in England has risen by 14 percent over the past year and with London being a hub for homeless people there is still a lot to be done to help.

The premise is sill the same: a percentage from every t-shirt sold goes to The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields to provide a homeless person with a hot meal and hot shower at the UK’s busiest homeless centre!

Sunglasses and umbrellas: A summer in London

This summer we’ve had just about everything – a bit of rain, some sunshine, a mini heat wave and thunderstorms. With this level of inconsistency, I think we should all make sure we’re kitted out with a pair of shades, and an umbrella just in case.

Now you can’t take the weather for granted so whatever the weather, I’ve put together some of my hot picks for looking stylish in the sun and when it decides to rain ten minutes later.

Click on the pictures to find out where to get them from.

End of term outing

Friday was our last day of term, and the start of a month off (I’ll try not to be smug about it), so to celebrate the hard work we have done, we went out and partied hard. A bunch of us went to New Cross’s premier (and only) nightclub, The Venue.

The only Venue in New Cross. Literally

A little back-story, as the Venue is the only proper night club near us, everyone used to go to it each Friday and Saturday night, and the majority of them hated it but returned each weekend. So, when I was 16, I made a vow that I would never go to the Venue, a vow that lasted up until last Friday (that’s nearly nine years).

Full of cheap drinks when we arrived, I surveyed what I had denied myself for eight years, and it seemed not that bad. There was a Killers tribute band, unimaginatively named The Killaz (yet they didn’t even rap or anything) performing, and making a half-decent job of sounding like The Killers.

With the usual suspects

The Killaz finished and then a DJ came on. I’d always been told that the music was mostly cheesy pop, but as a surprise to me, it wasn’t – I was in danger of having a good time.

A couple of times throughout the night a Christmas song would come on, and snow would fall from the roof. It wasn’t snow; it was little bits of foam, which was really cool. Well, it started off being really cool, and then got increasingly more annoying as it fell into my drink, and ruined my finely styled hair.

It wouldn't cripple the nation's transport network but it didn't half ruin my look!

Late into the night, the cheesy pop was unveiled, with Grease numbers and Saturday Night (y’know, that 90’s Whigfield abomination), at which point I decided that the Venue had served me well, and I may return to it sooner than another nine years time.

Lesson: Don’t make irrational vows to never set foot in somewhere, because it’s probably not that bad.

Photo Casebook: Students Riot in London

Remember the video about the student protests in the U.K. (see vid here). Well, last Thursday Parliament met and voted to raise university tuition fees significantly to three times the current amount. This seems massively unfair since the people voting were probably all beneficiaries of free higher education in the U.K.

No wonder students got so mad. These pictures show the immediate result of Parliament’s decision.

See more photos from the protest here !

Banksy and the 7/7 print

Above is the controversial print that has gone on display in Banksy pop-up gallery in London. By a chap called Mark Sinclair, the piece is called Age of Shiver and depicts the wreckage of the bus destroyed in the 7 July London terror attacks with angels flying above it.

Sinclair has said, “What I’m trying to do is to make anyone that has a faith, a belief, or an idea they hold close to their heart to think about the impact of these ideas when they leave their heads. I wanted to jolt people into seeing the results of these thoughts put into action.”

But John Falding, whose partner Anat Rosenberg died in the Tavistock Square attack, said he found the picture “quite upsetting”.

And in some quarters it’s even been suggested that the four angels above the bus are meant to represent the suicide bombers, of which there were four, and have gone as far to propose that it is in fact a tribute to the terrorist.

What do you think: “jolted” into thinking about belief systems or just upsetting?

The print is on display along with Banksy works at the Marks & Stencils gallery @ 1 Berwick Street, Soho until 22nd December.

Strongbow Bankers viral ads

Alright, so you’ve all seen those wicked Strongbow ads where working men from various fields, like “sofa delivery men of the M4 corridor”, are honoured for their contribution to the country in a first pint/knighthood-type ceremony. And the ones before them that featured the walk and rousing speech along the frontline of a battlefield.

Well they have versions (which I haven’t seen on TV but seem to have been around in viral world for a while) that address the nations feelings towards our loveable friends in The City, the bankers. Hilarious, check it out…

Student March

On Wednesday, the students of this great nation took to the streets of London to express their anger at the government’s proposals to raise tuition fees from £3,000 a year, to £9,000. Me and my classmate Gerard went along, to have a laugh and look at girls.

We arrived late to Trafalgar Square, where the march was due to start, everyone had moved down Whitehall and all the way down all we could see was thousands of people waving signs and chanting such things as: “no ifs, no buts, no education cuts.”

People power in full languid flow

We joined in the marching, but not the chanting – I wasn’t that worked up enough by that point. The march was moving extremely slowly and I was getting irritated by being bundled along so me and Gerard went into a Wetherspoons at the top of Whitehall, just until the crowd moved along a bit.

When we came out, the crowd had moved halfway down Whitehall, so we caught up with it to see if they’d thought of a more exciting chant, they hadn’t. We made our way through to Parliament Square, some blokes had climbed onto a bus stop, and by their non-stop dancing, it was obvious they had more than anger at tuition fees coursing through their veins.

When some guy tried to climb over the railings, the police grabbed him and pinned him to the floor before arresting him. A guy with a loudspeaker nearby started shouting: “That man got arrested for having an opinion. This is a police state.” – just for the record, it’s not a police state. People were having a sit-down protest outside the Houses of Parliament, which was stupid, cos the floor must have been freezing.

Che Guevara eat your heart out!

As we were making our way down to Millbank, where the march culminated, Gerard got a text from his girlfriend, who works around the corner, to tell us that people were smashing windows and generally fucking shit up. I looked behind me and saw about thirty policemen and women storming down in the direction of where we were going. It was at that point that we decided to take our protest against the rise of tuition fees to the pub.

Lesson: We are not the French – sitting in a pub and moaning is best form of protest.

James Barnor Ever Young

Went to the James Barnor Ever Young exhibition yesterday and I can say it gets the Love4culture seal of approval of awesomeness™. James Barnor is one of the first Ghanaian photojournalists. From taking portraits in his makeshift studio in Jamestown, Accra to moving to London in the late 50s and working as a fashion photographer, Barnor’s archive is like a route map of afro-modernity.

The first comprehensive exhibition of the photographer’s work is being shown at Rivington Place in Shoreditch until 27 November and features candid shots of the late great Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the still great Muhammad Ali and many a beautiful cover girl he shot for Drum magazine.

Go check it out!  Rivington Place, London EC2A 3BA
