Smokin’ Joe Frazier RIP

This is the best boxing documentary I have seen (first 3 parts, all other parts on You tube). The archive footage is impressive. I detest the way Ali made Joe Frazier into a hate figure among the black community and a traitor to his own race (and don’t let me get started on Ferdie Pacheco). Frazier was from humble roots and ended his days living in his boxing gym in Philadelphia right in the middle of the hood. America forgot about this boxing legend in their blind love for Ali. RIP Joe Frazier (January 12, 1944 – November 7, 2011).

R.I.P. Steve Jobs

I posted this video in August and I’m re-posting it again in honour of a legend who has touched the lives of billions. The video is inspirational. R.I.P. Steve Jobs.

Amy Winehouse

I remember seeing Amy at Brixton Academy around 2004. That’s how I want to remember her. I really hated hearing this news over the weekend. Another member of the 27 Club whose talent knew no bounds…gone too soon.

Gil Scott-Heron R.I.P

Sad that one the most important voices in 20th century music has passed away. I went to see him in concert last November when he played Brixton Academy in London, I even managed to catch him on film. So, since he died on May 27, 2011, in New York (reason for death undisclosed (but he had H.I.V.) I’ve been trying to write a fitting tribute. I pressed Ctrl A + delete on my draft as soon as I stumbled upon this documentary, originally broadcast in 1996. It’s excellent and sums up our hero perfectly. Gil Scott Heron Rest In Peace.

R.I.P. Nate Dogg

I heard news this morning that Nate Dogg passed away yestreday aged 41. All the reports are saying that the cause of death is not public at this time. I  remember the G-Funk era with fondness Nate Dogg, Snoop, Warren G and that whole West Coast laid back vibe were killing it in the early 90′s. G-Funk era volume 1, volume 2 etc.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends! The passing of West Coast legend deserves a ftting tribute.  Remember this classic by Nate Dogg and Warren G ? “Hit the East side of the LBC on a mission trying to find Mr Warren G…”

Martin Luther King Day

Today American’s celebrate the birth of Martin Luther King Jr with a public holiday. Let’s take a minute (or 17.28 to be precise) to reflect on what the great man who was labeled a terrorist by the US State Department stood for. The fact that America now has a black President is testament to King’s tireless dedication to the Civil Rights movement - the equal treatment of all people with respect to protection of the law and to the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property.

Obama's speech at Tucson memorial

On January 8, 2011, twenty people were shot (six of them fatally) during a meeting held by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords with members of her constituency in a supermarket parking lot near Tucson, Arizona USA. Congresswoman Giffords survived thanks to the quick thinking of her intern 20 year old Daniel Hernandez. The youngest victim of the killing was 9 year old Christina Taylor Green, buried yesterday who has become a symbol for peace and civility.

This type of event is what author Nassim Nicholas Taleb refers to as a Black Swan. An uncomtemplated and unpredictable event which changes the course of history significantly. For Daniel Hernandez, this will be the event that changes his life forever.  At the memorial speech he sat on Obama’s right and is swiftly becoming a household name.    

I find it hard to find lessons to learn from such a tradegy. How do you stop someone determined to kill? A 22-year-old Tucson man, Jared Lee Loughner, was arrested at the scene and joins a notorious list of such killers Timothy McVeigh, Abdelbaset Ali Mohammed al Megrahi, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold etc. It will be interesting to see what transpires about Loughner’s background.

An incident like this can only help to bring humanity closer. Across the world the impact is felt and I admire the way the Obama’s are helping to heal the pain. Here is Barack Obama’s full speech at the Tucson memorial.

R.I.P Leslie Nielsen

His deadpan delivery in comedy disaster movie Airplane marked him out as a gifted comedian and he became known for the line: “Don’t call me Shirley.” (see video).  This was  in 1980 when Nielsen was 54 and marked the beginning of his comedic run, films such as Naked Gun, the Smell of Fear and Final Insult (all of which I loved) followed.

Sadly, he passed away on 28 November 2010 in Florida where he was being treated for pneumonia. Read his obituary here
