Team GB kit for 2012

Adidas unveiled the Team GB kit for London 2012 yesterday to much fanfare and even heavier criticism. Designed by Stella McCartney the range has been widely panned for featuring a blue and white Union Jack and losing the red that represents the St George and St Patrick crosses. Check it out… and let us know if it is a yay or nay from you?

Linsanity: The bandwagon starter pack

Jeremy Lin (above) is the latest craze sweeping American sports right now. He is the Tim Tebow of basketball, the Barack Obama of Asian America, and his stock is so far through the roof you need a telescope to value it. So if not already, then his is a bandwagon you need to be firmly on board. And to help you get by in the murky world of popular opinion here’s just enough info on the man for you to be able to wing it as a Lin aficionado.

This is what he does…

ULTIMATE UNDERDOG
A few months ago Lin was sleeping on his brother’s couch and not even riding the bench of the team he now leads, the New York Knicks. But his story of defying the odds starts way before that… He received no athletic scholarship offers out of high school so he went and studied economics at Harvard, an institution that has produced more US Presidents (eight) than NBA players (four, and none since the 1950s until Lin). He was then overlooked by every NBA team in the draft pick. And after finally making his way to the NBA in 2010 via a summer league, he was sent back to the development league four times, which is like a Premier League player being loaned out to the Ryman League.

CHOCKING HIS OPPORTUNITY
Everything changed for Lin on Saturday, February 4, 2012 when Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, blighted by injuries and lack of options, through him on against the New Jersey Nets. Lin scored 25 points and the Knicks won. He then went on to inspire the Knicks to a seven-match winning streak and brake Shaquille O’Neill’s record for points scored in his first five career starts (hitting 136 to Shaq’s 129). As one pundit eloquently put it: “He didn’t just grab his opportunity, he chocked it by the neck.”

LINSANITY
Lin’s overnight rise to superstardom has been dubbed ‘Linsanity’. And its been massively helped by the fact he is the first Asian American to play in the league, thus overturning racial stereotypes about the sport and directly capturing the imagination of a sizeable chunk of the world’s population. All of which has seen him become the first New York athlete to feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated two weeks running, his No.17 jersey become the top online seller in the NBA, and Ben & Jerry’s release a Lin flavour ice cream in ode to him. Plus garner the nicknames JLin, the Linja, Super Lintendo, and the Yellow Mamba.

Taekwondo

I don’t know how many of you have ever watched a taekwondo  match (I’ve only seen a few) but here is our boy Chika Yagazie Chukwumerije aka ‘Yaga’ as we call him in action at the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)-organised 2012 London Olympic Games Qualifier held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Sadly Yagz picked up an injury that kept him out of his fight against Alexandros Nikolaidis and the chance to avenge the controversial defeat he suffered against the Greek fighter in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Yaga will be back better and stronger. CHECK OUT HIS FIGHT HERE, he was definitely at his best in the first round of the plus-80kg division fight against India’s seven-time national champion, Kundu Sandeep who he easily defeated 8-2.

A Real Hero: Stefaan Engels

No doubt you saw highlights of the London Marathon yesterday with Elite runners clocking the 24.2 mile distance in under 2hours 30 minutes. Most of us shudder at the thought of running continuously for that length of time, even worse is the fact that it would take an average person around 5 hours to cover the distance. Now imagine running 24 miles every single day for a whole year. That’s what Stefaan Engels did. What a Champion, give it up for this man!

Stefaan suffers from chronic asthma with lung capacity 30% below normal plus he is 50 years old. He ran 13 ‘official’ marathons throughout the year (e.g. Athens and NewYork). I’m ashamed that I feel proud after a 45 minute session on the gym treadmill. Stefaan’s average marathon time was 4 hours 15 minutes. I think this shows that the biggest obstacle for most people is in the mind. In an interview for Sport magazine Stefaan says he used alot of drugs to get through the bad moments… Drugs like music. Seriously, is that it?

I will never sponsor anyone to do one poxy marathon again. If a guy can run one every day for 365 days I would suggest that anyone who asks for my money to run a measly 24 miles multiply that distance by 7 at the very least then I might consider it.

Jacob Tucker 2011 dunk video

The first video is pretty awesome. Jacob Tucker, a guard at Illinois College, made this vid attempting to get into the 2011 NCAA slam dunk contest and it’s gone viral. Because Illinois College is a Division Three school in the U.S., Tucker doesn’t want to get overlooked for the fact that he doesn’t play at one of the top division schools. Standing 5’11″, Jacob Tucker claims a 50-inch running vertical jump.

The kid in the second video is pretty sick too and even more impressively he’s only 5’9″. Freakish talent all around.

Usman Ahmed knocked out

A simple rule in life is that whenever you talk yourself up, you have to be able to deliver. As the old and over-used cliche goes, ‘you have to be able to walk the walk and talk the talk’. It’s a shame Usman Ahmed can’t box as well as he dances and postures. He has fought for the English, British and Commonwealth super flyweight titles, losing each time.

Here’s a tip for Usman (apart from keep your guard up), if you want to put the fear of God into your opponents (and everybody watching) take lessons from the Mike Tyson school of boxing. No gimmicks, no clowning. See second clip below. Lethal.

Mike Tyson f*cking with millions. This is how you enter a boxing ring.

Kobe Bryant interview

“The Black Mamba,”  multi-time NBA MVP Kobe Bryant appeared as a guest on Conan O’Brien late show recently. Among the topics discussed were Kobe’s nickname, his commercial with Kanye West and Bruce Willis, on-court battles with the likes of Kevin Garnett and former teammate Shaquille O’Neal and his latest signature sneaker, the Zoom Kobe VI 3D.

Indian Pole Gymnastics

Allow me to introduce you to the ancient art of Mallakhamb, a traditional Indian sport in which a gymnast performs feats using a vertical wooden pole. This looks like it takes a ridiculous amount of practice.  Mallakhamb is something of a national sport in India, with origins that trace back to the mid-1100s. Usually, when I see great feats like this, I wish I could perform them. Mallakhamb doesn’t quite make me feel the same way (the orange speedos wouldn’t suit me in any case).

Rope Mallakhamb is modern twist on the centuries-old pole tradition. The gymnast performs a routine with a rope suspended from above like in the video below. It is unclear whether the rope or the pole has more potential to cause bodily harm.

I wonder how many Indian men are laid up somewhere with crooked limbs where Mallakhamb tricks have gone wrong, the same way some traditional snake charmers realised much too late that the cobra was only pretending to be their best friend.  My other query is how many guys balls never dropped due to stressing their package as young children while practising. The price of entertainment I guess.
