Why I’m striking

If you want to know in plain English what the recent strikes were about this London taxi driver chops it up nicely. Can’t argue with his passion.

Occupy Wall Street

The protest outside St Paul’s Cathedral in London is like the a yoga retreat compared to the tension in New York .

Darcus Howe

My new found respect for Darcus Howe. Big up to the person who had the sense to record this for dissemination to the masses (I’m sure the BBC have locked this away in a vault somewhere).

Seth Meyers kills Donald Trump

Ok forget the Obama clip below. Seth Meyers went in even harder on Donald. Talk about personal, Meyers killed him and you can see Trump squirming in his seat. For the audience it must have been like watching a football match in the last 10 minutes – squeaky bum time, what will he say next…outrageous.

Obama roasts Donald Trump

Last week was a week of triumph for Obama. As well as finally nailing Osama, the issue over his birth certificate has finally been put to bed. Obama goes in hard on Danald Trump in this speech at the White House Correspondents dinner. To be fair Donald Trump deserved the humiliation but Obama pulled his long shorts down and gave him six of the best. Now old Turkey head can get back to focusing on the issues that matter as Obama put it:

1. Did we fake the moon landing ?
2. What really happened in Roswell?
3. Where are Biggie and 2Pac?

Barack Obama 2012 Campaign Launch Video – "It Begins With Us"

If I were American I would be clamouring to be in this video. The movement is slowly awakening once more and we will be following this closely… I’ll post up my pics from the inauguration in 2008 very soon.

Rio's Drug War

The Boston Globe reports:

“A small war took place last week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Brazilian forces and hundreds of drug traffickers holed up in the shantytown complex dubbed Complexo do Alemão. After recent efforts by officials to pacify Rio’s drug and gang-related violence ahead of the upcoming the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics Games, drug gangs struck out last week – attacking police stations and staging mass robberies.

After days of preparation, Brazilian security forces launched a raid in the Complexo do Alemão, where between 500 and 600 drug traffickers were holed up. At least 42 people were killed in the violence last week, with security forces taking control of many neighborhoods. A relatively low number of arrests were made, and authorities warn of further conflict as continue to flush out more suspects in Rio’s maze of favelas.”

Obama's speech at Tucson memorial

On January 8, 2011, twenty people were shot (six of them fatally) during a meeting held by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords with members of her constituency in a supermarket parking lot near Tucson, Arizona USA. Congresswoman Giffords survived thanks to the quick thinking of her intern 20 year old Daniel Hernandez. The youngest victim of the killing was 9 year old Christina Taylor Green, buried yesterday who has become a symbol for peace and civility.

This type of event is what author Nassim Nicholas Taleb refers to as a Black Swan. An uncomtemplated and unpredictable event which changes the course of history significantly. For Daniel Hernandez, this will be the event that changes his life forever.  At the memorial speech he sat on Obama’s right and is swiftly becoming a household name.

I find it hard to find lessons to learn from such a tradegy. How do you stop someone determined to kill? A 22-year-old Tucson man, Jared Lee Loughner, was arrested at the scene and joins a notorious list of such killers Timothy McVeigh, Abdelbaset Ali Mohammed al Megrahi, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold etc. It will be interesting to see what transpires about Loughner’s background.

An incident like this can only help to bring humanity closer. Across the world the impact is felt and I admire the way the Obama’s are helping to heal the pain. Here is Barack Obama’s full speech at the Tucson memorial.

Age of Austerity ??

Fresh off the heels of Britain’s 20% VAT increase, the government continues to resist cries to find an alternative solution, claiming this is a necessary pain. But is it?

Britain’s Trillion Pound Horror Story is a 5 part documentary aired on CH4 recently, challenging this very claim.

Episodes 4 and 5 featured below convey how:

The State’s (Government’s) control of [certain] sectors deprives citizens of choice, creating a “State Monopoly” on (for example) education and health and in effect robbing the masses of choice.

The biggest State Monopoly outside of communist China, is the NHS.

For years the Government has spent more money than it generated…hence the debt. We are now told shrinking State provisions would hurt “poor people” making this “unfair”.

The state’s answer to this…yes you guessed it…more tax ! Which the government churn back into the benefits system where the same “poor people” pay as much in tax as they receive in benefits??!

Here’s the fact of the matter: “LAST YEAR, THE GOVERNMENT SPENT MORE ON WELFARE, THAN IT RAISED IN INCOME TAX!”

We should seriously re-visit the Hong Kong method, which a Briton ironically was the catalyst in creating.

In the early 60′s John Cowperthwaite turned Hong Kong around by simply believing that the best thing a government could do…was as little as possible.

He created prosperity by believing tax was an opposition to growth, thus scraping a lot of taxes and reducing income tax to 15%.

To this day, tax is paid by the “better off” in Hong Kong and “the poor” do not even pay tax.

The effect is the “Manhattan of Asia” that we see in Hong Kong today. By not punishing success, Hong Kong has continued to grow and can boast one of the best transportation systems and public sector services in the world. Why is this?….Because the government receive more income tax than they spend on the state due to the vast levels of prosperity enjoyed by all !

Photo Casebook: Students Riot in London

Remember the video about the student protests in the U.K. (see vid here). Well, last Thursday Parliament met and voted to raise university tuition fees significantly to three times the current amount. This seems massively unfair since the people voting were probably all beneficiaries of free higher education in the U.K.

No wonder students got so mad. These pictures show the immediate result of Parliament’s decision.

See more photos from the protest here !

Stephen Colbert Makes a Mockery of Congress

Stephen Colbert, a US comedian testifies on the current plight of migrant farm workers WHILE IN CHARACTER at a congressional hearing…

Has Congress gone mad? It’s a bit like Frankie Boyle appearing before the House of Lords in Mock the Week style. Still Colbert dishes out a few right hooks at Congress and U.S. immigration policy, so the point is made.

It makes for good entertainment as he remarks:
“I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican, I want it picked by an American and sliced by a Guatemalan, and served by a Venezuelan, in a spa, where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian.” Colbert concludes, “Maybe it’s better to have fruits that pick themselves.”
