Riza’s Picks: Iggy Azalea

Meet Iggy Azalea the up and coming rapper from Australia. She became an internet sensation about a year ago with her freestyles over well known songs such as Chris Brown’s Look At Me Now and Kanye West’s Hell Of A Life.

I wouldn’t say she is the best lyricist I’ve ever heard, but she is different which I appreciate. She has a nice flow, a sort of grimy tone, and is less gimmicky than Nicki Minaj, Kreyshawn or Azelia Banks. Plus she is super hot and has a super fashion sense!

Iggy has recently signed with Interscope Records, with her debut album The New Classic set to be released this June. She’s over dedicated to her craft and hands on with the visuals of her videos. Check out the My World video to understand my excitement for this female rapper I actually give ratings to.

#BOLD spotlight: Tinashe In Case We Die

In Case We Die is the debut mixtape by 19-year-old Tinashe. The mixed Zimbabwean, Irish, Norwegian, and Danish songstress is a viral star with over 1 million YouTube views on some of her material. But her true artistry really comes out in this project and its just wow! Not what I expected at all! I’m simply in love with this mixtape. The lyrical content was #BOLD, the production #BOLD the entire project is just #BOLD. Clearly my kind of chick all day.

She reminds me of a female The Weeknd, from the shifts in her vocal range, delivery, lyrical content, and vibe of this mixtape. And I read that she recorded this mixtape over the span of 18 days where she wrote, produced, and recorded herself, in the confines of her bedroom! I enjoyed this mixtape from beginning to end so #beBOLD and check it out (click pic to download)…

Plan B ill Manors

Plan B returns to rap with a bang in hard-hitting new single ill Manors. Staying one step ahead of the scene as always the East London wordsmith follows his brilliant soul concept album The Defamation of Strickland Banks with this sharp-tongued social commentary of the state of our nation’s inner cities. Both track and video pull no punches in its assessment of last summer’s riots and the class divide that helped perpetuate it. The video even features real footage from the riots.

In fact the rapper feels so strongly about the track’s theme that he released a written statement along with it to ensure the song’s message could not be misconstrued. Read statement and listen to track below…

“The world, and this country especially, is full of contradictions. I’m just highlighting them, I’m not condoning anything. I aired my feelings about the riots very publicly when they happened and I still feel the same way.

What happened in Tottenham in some ways I can understand but what happened everywhere else in the country was opportunism. I won’t justify it because I don’t agree with it. In fact it upset me so much I want to change it, so I wrote this song to bring the issue back to the forefront of public conversation. I feel it has been swept under the carpet and forgotten about, and it still needs to be properly addressed.

Since the riots happened I haven’t heard enough people within the public sector asking the two most important questions; ‘why did it happen and how can we prevent it from happening again?’ I do have a theory as to why and how but first I need to make my point. And I’ve chosen satire to do so.

The point being made in my song ill Manors is that society needs to take some responsibility for the cause of these riots. Why are there so many kids in this country that don’t feel they have a future, or care about having a criminal record?

I think one of the reasons is that there is a very public prejudice in this country towards the underclass. These kids are ridiculed in the press as they aren’t as educated as others, because they talk and dress in a certain way… but they’re not as stupid as people think. They are aware of the ill feelings towards them and that makes them feel alienated. I know because I felt it myself growing up. These kids have been beaten into apathy. They don’t care about society because society has made it very clear that it doesn’t care about them.

An example of this is the word ‘chav’ that means council housed and violent, a derogatory phrase that is openly used by certain sectors of middle England to label and define people from poor backgrounds. It’s a derogatory phrase no different in my opinion to the ones concerning race or sex. The difference is that the papers use it publicly. If they did the same with racial or sexist derogatory terms it would be deemed, and rightly so, as offensive and politically incorrect. That in my opinion is hypocrisy.

If you’re born into a family that’s has enough money to educate you properly, you are privileged. You’re not better than anyone else you’re just lucky. Certain sectors of middle England, not all of them, but the ignorant ones need to wake up and realise that …and stop ridiculing the poor and less fortunate. That is what this song is about.”

Riza’s Picks: Kaleem Taylor

Fresh talent Kaleem Taylor is an artist to watch out for in 2012. I first came across him when I attended the Miguel show @HMV forum in Kentish town a few months ago, and Kaleem was supporting act.

I didn’t know what to expect, as I had never heard of him before, but he sang into the mic and I was taken aback by the soulful voice that came out. I actually had to look around at the audience like am I the only one hearing this!!

His voice is a mixture of neo-soul singer Omar with the riffs, vocal tones, and simple lyrics similar to Frank Ocean. Yeah I said it!

I really see big things for him in the future, he already has radio DJ’s spinning his tracks and recently had a spot with Trevor Nelson in the live lounge where he performs a cover of one of my favourite songs from Frank Ocean, Thinking About You.

So go check him out, download his EP at Kaleemtaylor.com and have a listen. You need to be up on this!

Riza’s Picks: Maverick Sabre

Most of you will be shocked to know that Maverick is not new to the music scene, in fact he hit the internet with his music back in 2008. I was only introduced to him late last year when I heard his single Let Me Go on the radio. The DJ failed to say his name at the end of the track and I thought it was a new song from Finley Quaye or Daniel Merriweather (because of the reggae type voice and impressive vocal range). After hours of searching on the internet I was shocked to find out it was neither of those artists, but a young Irish singer named Michael Stafford.

It’s clear to see he is a talented young man, and can’t be compared to many artists around at the moment, which helps him stand out from the crowd. He has already worked with the likes of Chase & Status and Professor Green, and toured with Cee Lo Green, Plan B and Snoop Dogg. I predict big things for him in 2012. Check out his newly released album Lonely Are The Brave in stores now!

Some of the illest lyrics I’ve heard in a while. “Marcus Garvey organised six million people with no facebook or twitter…” My boy Akala has his knowledge on point and is one of the U.K.s finest spitters. Full Stop. Who else is on his level ?

And I Am Telling You

“A performance of  ”And I Am Telling You” by the ORIGINAL Effie, Ms. Jennifer Holliday. Jennifer Hudson did her thing but Ms Holliday blows away almost anyone else in modern times with this performance, securing herself a rightful place amongst this era’s greats (Aretha, Whitney, Ella, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Mahalia Jackson).

From the 1982 Tony Awards, where she won the award for Best Actress for her creation and portrayal of Effie in the then-breakout smash musical “Dreamgirls.” The scene and preceding song lead up to “And I Am Telling You,” which begins at around 3.25, but the whole scene is an invaluable look at what Jennifer Holliday was really made of (And she’s only 21 here?!?)

And to think she performed this EVERY night for TWO YEARS straight… Let’s see Whitney, Christina, Mariah, or anyone else do that!”
